It’s hard to believe that the popular Dreamworks animated film Shrek first hit cinema screens in 2001. Ten years later, the musical opened in the UK at Drury Lane, and now we get to watch this reworked spectacular show at Curve.

The story of the green ogre that gets sent out into the world to fend for himself at the age of seven has an enduring appeal, and it was lovely to see adults and children of all ages enjoying the show.

And what a show it is, the stage sets are stunning throughout, with scenery that really complements this fairytale musical.

The trio of Shrek, played by Anthony Lawrence, Princess Fiona played by Joanne Clifton, and the energetic Donkey, played by Brandon Lee Sears, really give it their all in this performance, and work well together.

Of particular note for me was the song by young Fiona, teen Fiona and the grown-up Princess ‘I Know it’s Today’, this was portrayed perfectly, with the differing levels of scenery adding to the effect.

‘Morning Person’ was also executed really well, Clifton’s comedy timing was absolutely spot on. The former Strictly star also shines when she meets up with the Pied Piper and shows off her skills tap dancing with the rats.

The duo of Shrek and Fiona out-doing each other in ‘I Think I Got You Beat’ was also equally as entertaining, really funny, and particularly enjoyed by the younger audience!

The dragon was cleverly played with a combination of an impressive puppet and Cherece Richards – whose powerful vocal performance of ‘Forever’ was just incredible.

Georgie Buckland, the voice of Gingy, also has an impressive vocal range which really added to the ensemble performances.

Pinocchio, played by Mark D’Arcy was also a real standout character. His portrayal in ‘Story of My Life’ was excellent, and his dancing skills are worth looking out for too.

The whole ensemble was a joy to watch, each member of the cast in this show shines in their own right.

The finale sees the audience getting on their feet as the cast treat us to ‘I’m a Believer’, leaving everyone wanting the show to go on.

Shrek is at Curve until Saturday October 21.

Audio described performance Thursday October 19. Captioned performance Friday October 20.

Tickets £10-£57.50.
