With the book The 101 Dalmations originally written by Dodie Smith, which was first published in 1956, this really is a tale (or should I say tail!) that stands the test of time. It is a story of love, life, hope and happiness, triumphing over Cruella’s evil ways.
Written by Douglas Hodge (music and lyrics) and Johnny McKnight (book), from a stage adaptation by Zinnie Harris, this new musical will appeal to audiences of all ages.
With Pongo and Perdi deftly controlled by actors/puppeteers Benedict Hastings and Emma Thornett, they really steal the show. In fact, all the dogs/puppeteers do. The puppets are so lifelike with their puppy dog eyes and wag of their tails.
Hapless fashion designer Tom played by Samuel Thomas and pet shop worker Danielle played by Jessie Elland, meet (or rather their dalmatians do) and fall in love. The scenes when they first meet and awkwardly arrange a date are really endearing.
When Perdi gives birth to her litter of puppies, Cruella De Vil – played by Steps’ Faye Tozer sets her nephews Casper, played by Charles Brunton and Jasper, played Danny Hendrix, to steal them for their fur to be used in one of her designs.
The pair bring a real slapstick comedy element to the show, with excellent comic timing. Faye Tozer’s performance throughout is excellent, her vocals are incredible and her character becomes more evil as the musical progresses.
From the very first number, “Take Me Home”, the beautiful harmonies and songs really tell the story. The staging of the musical is seamless, with scene changes taking place quickly without interfering with the flow of the performance and the lighting really complements the action.
The puppy puppets are all skilfully managed by the ensemble who bring each one to life. Each scene is memorable, but the one that stood out to us was when Pongo and Perdi went to rescue the pups in the snow, that, and of course when the real puppy made an appearance!
Highly recommended for everyone who loves dogs, and even those who don’t, this is the perfect musical.
